The 2nd Amendment
Lyrics
“To secure the free state, well regulated militia is necessary
So the right of people to the keeping and bearing
Of Arms shall not be infringed"
That’s it. That’s all that’s said. It’s meant to protect citizens
From arbitrary government coming in and taking over shit
We feared oppressive tyrants thats the reason for this
We had no standing army, we needed a militia
To be called upon in case we needed to defend the region
But times have changed, capacity for mass destruction
Is now at the hands of any crazed citizen who wants it
They can stock pile arms, buy military weapons
They think that its protection against any perceived threat and
we don’t check get it, there’s no intervention
Mass homicides weekly without a sense of prevention
Its domestic terrorism, so whats the lessons?
Amend this amendment to end this civic oppression
Analysis
In 2021, the staunch defense of this Amendment has resulted in an epidemic of murderous civic oppression. Nothing is being done. Why? Because, according to the 2nd Amendment - written at a time when a musket/rifle could fire 3 shots per minute - people have a right to protect their ownership of guns.
That logic is outdated and dumb.
When the Constitution was crafted, we were 5 years removed from the American Revolution. We still remembered the British troops marching through our territory and taking away our liberties. We relied on Militias to support our tiny army.
After the war, the army was disbanded and militias were relied on to serve and protect. We knew that there were potential threats in the world. European powers saw us struggle and waited to invade. And, without political tradition to restrict it, a new government could easily descend into tyranny. So we wanted to protect the people. And we even knew back then that they needed to be “well-regulated”.
That’s the historical background.
Now, we have a standing army and law enforcement agencies to protect us. Militias have no more purpose.
But Conservative argue that guns are needed for “protection from government tyranny”.
And yet, the biggest threat to the individual rights in modern American history was Donald Trump, a man who gun-rights advocates have blindly followed.
Conservatives also argue that there is “a mental health crisis, NOT a gun crisis,” I would argue that there is a gun crisis BECAUSE there is a mental health crisis. Rampant anger, paranoia and depression is fueling people to harm others and themselves. They should not be able to access guns so easily.
I recognize the improbability of being able to take all of the guns in the country. The absurd reality is that too many people care more about protecting their property than human life.
But is absolutely absurd that people are so blinded by illogical arguments that they are unwilling to recognize the need for stricter gun laws. There are stricter laws for driving a car than for buying a gun. As long we continue denying the Common Sense laws, then we can never claim our country is “exceptional”.
